Overclock Extrême d'un G4
Voilà longtemps que nous rêvions de faire un overclock extrême d'un processeur G4
Overclock goes extreme :
We decided to get around this limit. As shown on this photo, we did not let sentiments get in the way, and broke the 21st leg of the component that regulates the core voltage, namely the LTV1709.
Higher voltages were now attainable. Aware of the risks, we also "optimized" the cooling provided by the waterblock.
Icy water on the heat exchanger gave spectacular results since, in spite of the room temperature higher than 27 C, it would make the processor very cold while running.
At 2.1 V (0.5V higher than the previous setting), it was still impossible to boot at 1.1 GHz.
At 2.1 V (0.5V higher than the previous setting), it was still impossible to boot at 1.1 GHz.
At 2.2V, bingo, the CPU starts operating at 1.1GHz and goes up to launching the Finder, but then shows unstability signs.
At 2.3V the processor was running stable at 1.1GHz
We then torture-tested it to see how stable it would stay.
It did not fail. Success !
